Love creative writing? The Howard Nemerov Writing Scholars Program is designed for students with a true dedication to writing and exceptional writing talent. Scholars participate in a series of educational experiences designed to meet the needs and interests of writers, including enrollment in the Howard Nemerov Writing Seminar, submission of their work to campus publications, attendance at and participation in writing-related social activities, and a commitment to earn a minor in English writing.

Up to 10 $3,000 scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarships are renewable annually, as long as you are making satisfactory progress toward a degree.

Eligibility

Students who apply to the College of Arts & Sciences may apply for the Nemerov Writing Scholars Program.

Notification for Finalists

Finalists are notified by the end of February.

To apply for the Howard Nemerov Writing Scholars Program:

  • Submit an application for admission to the Class of 2029.
  • Upload two samples of your creative writing, preferably in different genres (for example one short story and a group of poems, or a short play and a piece of creative nonfiction). Samples should only represent the genres of creative writing—fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting. Please do not send academic papers or instructor notes, comments, or grades.
  • If you’re submitting the Common Application, you can upload your samples in the Writing Supplement section. If you’re submitting the Coalition Application, you will apply through the WashU Pathway after you’ve submitted both your profile and the Washington University-specific questions.
