WashU is part of the Kessler Scholars National Collaborative.
WashU launched a Kessler Scholars Program to enroll and support up to 20 first-generation college and limited-income students each year who want to improve society using their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees.
Through support in areas, including academics, social engagement, and career development, scholars benefit from an integrated student experience as they progress through their academic and personal journeys.
This program is housed within the Taylor Family Center for Student Success, which creates opportunities for first-generation and limited-income undergraduate students to connect with mentors, strengthen social and professional networks, explore purpose-driven internships, and build community.
Kessler Scholars receive:
- Financial aid offers that meet 100% of the student’s demonstrated need.
- “No-loan” financial aid policy for admitted undergraduate students.
- Waived $1,550 summer earnings expectation. Most financial aid offers include an expectation that the student will contribute $1,550 of their own summer earnings toward the cost of education. This expectation is waived for Kessler Scholars.
- $1,500 in Start-Up Grant funds to aid in the transition to college, helping to cover expenses associated with necessary school items.
- A first-year Technology Grant that covers the cost of a laptop computer that meets the minimum requirements for study at WashU, plus a 4-year warranty. The computer must be purchased through the campus store.
- Full funding to participate in a pre-orientation program.
- Up to two $5,000 grants to support summer research, internships, or study abroad experiences after the completion of the first year.
- Special access to advising support, career development programming, and close association with the Gephardt Center for Community Engagement.
No additional application is required. Students will be considered based on their application for admission and financial eligibility.
